Matt DeChamplain is a jazz pianist rooted in the historic tradition of the jazz piano masters such as Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock and Art Tatum amongst numerous others. He received his training at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts (where he currently teaches now) and at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at The Hartt School where his education continues today. There Matt studies with Steve Davis, Nat Reeves, and Andy LaVerne. He also continues to explore the classics of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller with the guidance of stride pianist Jeff Barnhart. Matt has had the privilege of playing with Dave Brubeck, Jon Hendricks, Jaimoe (drummer from the Allman Brother’s Band), Jose Feliciano, and Jackie McLean. He also has been blessed with the opportunity to play at the Berks Jazz Festival (in PA), the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz in Bushnell Park and International Hartford Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival in NYC, and the Monterey Jazz Festival (in CA). In March of 2008, Matt was selected to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. where he worked with jazz legends Curtis Fuller and Dr. Billy Taylor. He continues to perform throughout New England and New York City and enjoys every opportunity to teach and pass on the tradition.
